An abaya size chart helps you buy an abaya that falls gracefully to the ankle, sits easily on the shoulders and leaves room to move. Getting the length right matters most, because a hem that drags or stops too high spoils the look.
This guide explains how to measure yourself in five steps, gives a general height-to-length table, and shares tips for free-size styles, layering and shoes.

Why size matters for an abaya
- Length: the hem should brush the top of the feet.
- Shoulders: seams should sit at or just past the shoulder.
- Bust: enough ease so the front does not pull.
- Sleeves: long enough to cover the wrist when you raise your arms.
Sizing varies between brands and countries. The Wikipedia article on clothing sizes explains why, so always measure rather than guess.
How to measure for an abaya in 5 steps
- Length: stand straight without shoes and measure from the top of the shoulder, beside the neck, to the floor.
- Bust: measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape level.
- Shoulders: measure across the back from one shoulder point to the other.
- Sleeves: measure from the shoulder point to the wrist bone with the arm slightly bent.
- Hips: measure around the widest part, for fitted or belted styles.
Ask someone to help with the length, as bending to read the tape changes the measurement.
Abaya size chart by height
| Your height | Typical abaya length |
|---|---|
| 4 ft 10 in – 5 ft 0 in | 52 in |
| 5 ft 0 in – 5 ft 2 in | 54 in |
| 5 ft 2 in – 5 ft 4 in | 56 in |
| 5 ft 4 in – 5 ft 6 in | 58 in |
| 5 ft 6 in – 5 ft 8 in | 60 in |
| Above 5 ft 8 in | 62 in or more |
Use this as a starting point only. Your own shoulder-to-floor measurement, minus about one inch, is the most reliable abaya length.
Abaya size chart for bust and ease
Abayas are cut loose, so they need ease: extra room beyond your body measurement. A relaxed A-line usually has plenty, while belted or coat styles have less.
- Loose and A-line styles: choose your usual size.
- Between sizes: the larger one gives more room for layering.
- Coat and belted styles: check the bust measurement carefully; see our abaya coat guide.

Abaya size chart tips for petite and tall women
Petite and tall women often find standard lengths do not quite fit. A few small adjustments to how you read an abaya size chart help.
- Petite: choose the shorter length and check the sleeves too; a tailor can shorten the hem.
- Tall: look for 60 inches or more, and choose wide or long sleeves.
- Curvy: A-line and open-front cuts give more room through the hips.
Hems are easy to shorten but cannot be lengthened, so if in doubt choose the longer option. Our plus size abaya guide covers flattering cuts.
Free size, prayer dresses and khimars
Many prayer dresses and khimars are free size: a loose cut that fits most women. Length is the main thing to check if you are very tall or petite.
Our cotton prayer khimar comes in XXL with a 4-foot length, so it covers fully in every position of prayer. Our hijab dress guide explains the one-piece styles.
Shoes, layering and fabric
- Heels: add the heel height to your length if you will always wear them.
- Layering: size up if you wear a cardigan or thick top underneath.
- Crinkle fabric: can look slightly shorter on the body, so do not go too short.
- Washing: cotton can shrink a little; check the care label.
Our abaya material guide explains how each fabric behaves.

Using an abaya size chart
An abaya size chart is only as good as your measurements. Measure your shoulder-to-floor length, bust and sleeves, use the height table as a guide, and size up if you plan to layer.
